Poetic Unity is a registered charity (1171832) based in London, UK. Founded in February 2015, our mission is to encourage the unification, education and personal development of young people through the art of poetry and spoken word. We facilitate workshops and events to carry out our objectives; we have over 10 years of experience in our team working with young offenders, hard to reach children and children at risk. We have seen that creativity is an important tool to assist the next generation and we give young people the opportunity to express themselves and learn in a safe and friendly environment.
techniques, performance skills, life skills, social skills, confidence and personal development. We carefully create each workshop so that it is catered to the particular needs of the young people we work with. We believe poetry to be therapeutic for young people which allows them to engage and tackle certain issues they would usually find difficult to speak about. We run workshops in young offender’s institutes, pupil referral units, youth clubs, special needs schools, mainstream schools and specialised performance workshops.
Poetic Unity strives to unite young people from all walks of life. One of the ways we do this is through regular events which give young people a safe haven to meet and perform to their peers. We’ve put on over 300 events since February 2015 including our weekly poetry event ‘The Poets Corner’ which has been running for over 3 years and is the only event of its kind in South London. We are keen on helping the poetry event scene grow as we believe it’s important young people have safe environments to attend and express themselves.
Poetic Unity aims to open discussion on taboo subjects with the young people we work with. We do this by encouraging young people to write collaborative poetry on hard to talk about about subjects to get an idea of each individual’s perspective. One example of this is a poetry video we did called ‘All in the name of Love’ where seven young people wrote about ‘Domestic Violence’ a subject usually not spoke of. We released the video on YouTube channel ‘LinkUpTV’ & it has over 4,000 hits to date. We’ve received rave reviews for the video and have seen the benefit it has had on the community to open up about difficult subjects in a creative way. We aim to do more of these videos in the future.
Although running for just over 3 years we have been praised highly for our impact with the thousands of young people we have worked with so far. We are proud partners with Black Cultural Archives & Theatre Peckham. We are also happy to support other organisations such as registered charity ‘Alzheimer’s Society’ in which we raised over £1,000 for them at our event ‘Positive Influence 4’ in December 2015. We became a registered charity on March 1st 2017.
