CULTURAL LEADERS

ABOUT THE ROLE 

 

The Cultural Leaders Youth Employment Scheme provides paid work for 6 young people (aged 18-30 years old) every 6 months with London charities Poetic Unity, Theatre Peckham and Black Cultural Archives. The scheme which is part of the Poetic Relief Project funded by the National Lottery Community Fund gives young people real on the job experience in the charity and art sectors. The Cultural Leaders will run poetry workshops, events, provide support for the community and learn about the daily operations of the charity they are designated too. The first cohort of Cultural Leaders started in September 2021, and they have been a great success! The Cultural Leaders have helped each charity extend their impact and they have learnt transferable skills they can use for future employment.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

 

The Cultural Leaders will have a passion for supporting the community and making a positive change in society. You will need strong interpersonal skills as you will be responsible for supporting and communicating with a large number of young people from a variety of backgrounds. Experience in youth work and leading workshops preferred but not essential as training will be provided.

CHAIR OF TRUSTEES

ABOUT THE ROLE 

 

The Chair will provide strong leadership to the board of trustees to ensure Poetic Unity develops and achieves its strategic objectives, complies with its legal duties, and delivers maximum impact to its beneficiaries. The role ensures that there are effective relationships with the CEO and senior management team to bring both support and constructive challenge in the best interest of Poetic Unity. In partnership with the trustees and CEO the Chair acts as an ambassador for Poetic Unity, assisting in raising awareness of the work we do, representing us at external events, building constructive relationships with partners and supporting our ambitious fundraising plans.

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

The new Chair will bring a strong understanding of the role of charity boards as well as governance experience and significant strategic leadership. Your strong interpersonal skills will build relationships across all stakeholders, motivating and bringing people together to deliver the best possible results for Poetic Unity. You will have sound independent judgement and will encourage others to do the same. You will demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to Poetic Unity, its strategic objectives, cause and values. A knowledge and understanding of the youth sector, voluntary sector and charity governance are essential.

TREASURER

 

ABOUT THE ROLE 

As a member of the board of trustees, the Treasurer will have the expertise to ensure the strategic oversight of Poetic Unity's finances and to support appropriate decisions and good governance by the board. The Treasurer will ensure Poetic Unity keeps proper accounts alongside preparing the bookkeeping, budgeting and reports. The role will involve reviewing Poetic Unity’s financial performance, investment policies and the effectiveness of the financial controls in place. The Treasurer will advise the board on how to carry out it’s financial responsibilities and advise on financial implications of Poetic Unity’s strategy.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The new Treasurer should have financial and audit/risk experience (financial qualification desired) and experience of board level roles such as CFO, Finance Director, Treasurer or equivalent. An outstanding record of professional achievement in your field, with a commensurate personal reputation for excellence, with a particular focus on strategic finance, audit, and risk, planning and performance. You should have a strong understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship. You should have an appreciation of the nature of risk management at board level and be able to galvanise external relationships and build support for Poetic Unity.
